Someone on Broadwayworld is claiming RENT is opening this summer (his friend has been cast) but at The National!!??

Now is it me or is this a very odd place for it to open?

I have heard that they have been having difficulty finding a venue but I would very surprised if it ended up at the NT.

I think they didn't take the Trafalgar because the space turned out to be not suitable? I dunno... there's been so much flying around about this for so long.

Must admit the NT does seem a strange choice for such a mega-musical when they tend to do classic revivals or less-known musicals such as Caroline, or Change. wacko.gif

I can't see this happening. The NT doesn't do zeigeist musicals....evn ones from 10 years ago.

It has been fully cast. Awaiting a theatre apparently.

it was cast, but no contracts were ever issued because of the delay (due to nobody thinking to properly soundproof the trafalgar studios when it was converted  rolleyes.gif ) so there's no guarantees that the cast that was in place for the planned feb opening will be the one that appears as and when it emerges in summer.

I can see it working at the NT, it's the kind of thing that would attract a similar audience to Jerry Springer the Opera. In the UK Rent isn't the cult phenomenon it is in the US therefore it needs a limited run in an acclaimed house in order to do well.
