Since the guy claims he won't register - compulsory registration = problem solved.

Though with multiple threads on the same subject, spamming, porn, and deliberative offensive posters being ignored by the powers-that-be, I'm not sure I can be bothered to read this board much longer unless someone takes a bit of responsibility for it. Which is a shame since it should be an excellent source of news and views and 5 minutes a few times a day is all that's needed to run it properly.

I just checked for new messages and fully half of all the new threads are spam. Not pleased. Not at all pleased.

It's not just the inconvenience of the spam that bothers me, but that the spammers get away with it. Worse than the spammers (who couldn't care less whether their messages get through or not) are the types like normad, who return time and time again. Losers they may be, but they're losers who need to be LARTed.

The delay in appointing moderators may be because the admin is waiting to see who is on here regularly before making a choice. I hope some people are appointed soon.

I don't want to depress anyone, but it's going to get worse. On the Vim mailing list someone reports seeing a proof-of-concept video of software that can automatically set up a new gmail or yahoo mail account, use that to register with forum software (and deal with supposedly "humans only" features), and then post advertising to the forum, all without human intervention. At the moment such techniques are rarely employed because there are so many easier targets that don't require registration, right here being one of them. Even so, I don't think the day is too far off when it'll be impossible to run a forum without requiring registration plus confirmation from a valid non-free email account.

"The Internet is really, really great..."
"...for spam!"

You know what guys, when i became a member of this site i thought "At last, a site where i could share my views"..granted not everyone valued my opinion, i took that on board & slowed down my campaign..but i still found it  refreshing to be around like minded people like myself with a lot of valuable input about things they held dear..now i find due to theses f***** w***** that this is not such a pleasant site to be around, unless the powers that be do something about it ASAP then i feel "whatsonstage" will become or is becoming a free for all...such a shame as it was beginning to feel like home, so now i"m afraid i must fly the coop & find another abode! Farewell Dear listeners....

WoS have missed a trick. They are letting their new board flounder in the opening days. Surely somebody from their company checks the boards and threads.

Nope.  Well admin has been on a couple of times because I've seen him in the user list but if you call them up and tell them there's spam they react like they're not even sure if they have a board.

It's such a shame that this site is being hit by these spammers especially as WOS are obviuosly trying to improve the way the Forum is perceived.  Compulsory registration would certainly help to cut down on this problem and there are still ways to disguise your real identity of you want to.  It's not that difficult if you don't want people to know who you really are.  I have read WOS for a long time but never posted until this new messageboard because I didn't want people to think someone else was me as I saw so many people using other people's names.

I can't understand the mentality of these spammers- are they actually selling anything, because realistically they aren't going to sell anything to anyone on here (correct me if I'm wrong). Initially, I thought that compulsory registration wasn't needed, but having seen the consequences, it's a necessity- possibly even with more security if it'll stop the crap from annoying everyone.

All of what has happened in the last few days was perfectly feasible on the old board, so the partial registration (which I fully admit I argued for as 2nd best to full registration) has not worked. As I have posted elsewhere, I simply do not understand why WOS is being targetted in this way when other boards (which also allow links) are not.

Each time I see one of these attacks I use the "report" function, and - even over the weekend - these malicious postings are being removed.

What is needed is a far more rigorous scheme of moderation to stamp out the spammers. I appreciate that WoS are having a hard time re-establishing the site after the server failure, but more effort needs to be put into monitoring the board, before it alienates the theatre minded posters.

Normad's language is pretty awful and his grasp of dialectic admittedly seems limited - but it's not really much worse than many things you can catch at the Royal Court or the Lyric Hammesmith most months, or even at Stratford (depraved Days of Significance) and the National (eg last year's obscenity-littered Market Boy). Yet few WOS posters are shocked by that.
