I'd say Matilda is a British/Australian musical; its producers, book writer, novelist, director, designer, orchestrator and sound designer are all British, and its composer/lyricist and lighting designer are all ex-pat Australians (which, is essentially, British).
It's just NOT an American musical - and, for that, we should be proud.
I think Matilda and Billy Elliot are more British than most British mega musicals:
