it resizes the avatars automatically, so it shouldn't matter - mine was 100x100 originally and has downsized okay.

It's just that I make my own avatars so they're specifically 100x100...  I guess I'll have to make some specifically smaller!  I think the animated one I wanted to use would be too large a file anyway.  Oh well.
