Job description: Whatsonstage.com seeks a deputy editor to contribute daily editorial and maintain the business’ position as consistently the first with theatre news and gossip. The deputy editor will be digitally aware and help develop and deliver the company’s social media strategy in line with targets.

Reports to: Editor and Managing and editorial director

The company: Whatsonstage.com is a media and lifestyle brand that aims to become synonymous with theatregoing by converting the casual entertainment seeker into the avid theatregoer. Whatsonstage.com creates comprehensive, comment-worthy and quotable content, runs events for a 3000-strong theatregoers’ club and stages the only audience-led theatre awards, the Whatsonstage.com Awards.

Main responsibilities of the role:

• Contribute to all areas of editorial across the site - news, features, gossip, interviews, review round-ups
• Liaise with regional editors and freelance contributors to ensure broad coverage of UK theatre
• Closely monitor theatre news and broader developments in the theatre industry.
• Take responsibility for managing photo stories – first night galleries and production images
• Source and upload video and audio content
• Assist in sourcing pictures and contribute content for Whatsonstage.com’s bi-monthly magazine
• Assist with coverage of annual Edinburgh Festivals, requiring one week in Edinburgh
• Air views via editors’ blog as and when moved/required

Social Media
• Grow Whatsonstage.com’s existing social media presence in line with targets set in agreement with the business
• Continually monitor and ensure that Whatsonstage.com follows emerging best practice in a fast-moving environment
• Spot trends in social media, evaluating emerging platforms in line with the business’ long and short term objectives
• Provide social media and editorial coverage of live events as required, eg live blogging press launches or awards ceremonies
• Ensure best utilisation of existing social media platforms including YouTube and iTunes

Project Management
• Work with internal and external developers and designers on ongoing improvements to the Whatsonstage.com site
• Contribute on a project by project basis to microsite design and implementation
• Stay abreast of general technology trends and advise Whatsonstage.com how these can be harnessed for the benefit of the business
• Compile reports demonstrating ROI for individual projects in line with long and short term objectives
• In cooperation with others in the business compile specification documents for internal use and external tender processes

• Collate statistics for monthly editorial and social media reports
• Attend and contribute to regular team and editorial meetings
• Be an ambassador for Whatsonstage.com in the theatre community, attend networking events where possible
• Attend and help staff Whatsonstage.com Outings across the West End
• Be prepared to work outside normal office hours as required
• Ensure that the company brand is used consistently across all communications

Personal Specification

• A passion for theatre and the performing arts
• Fully computer literate and numerate using packages including Microsoft Word and Excel
• Experience using a CMS system to upload and edit content
• Excellent editing and writing skills
• Show understanding of best social media practice
• The ability to work to tight deadlines and manage a diverse range of simultaneous projects
• An understanding of tools to monitor social media engagement
• Educated to degree standard with excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to present at a senior level
• Ability to plan and prioritise duties and responsibilities whilst working to tight deadlines

• Experience of developing social media strategy and reporting results back to business
• An understanding of online analytics tools including Google Analytics
• Experience of managing online projects and interacting with designers and developers
