The Copenhagen production of Phantom was perfection, with some fabulous casting and attention to detail that easily surpassed London's in recent years. Pity they have to spoil memories of that with this, but I suspect this is part of raising their international profile more than anything else. All I can say is I don't envy the translator who has to deal with that libretto...

the costume designs are interesting, atleat in their sketch form, sort of a weld between the London ones but with the flair of the Aussie ones.

Still interested in seeing the sets.

On the website I got a bit excited at the first clip because I thought he would be wearing the mask from Phantom, but then I saw the publicity photo and he wears a new mask that isn't bad, but I wish future productions of this would use the original style mask (although it does make sence he would need a new mask since he left his mask behind in the first one)

If the above is supposed to be a translation of a review, it's a pretty poor translation. This one makes more sense:

Love Never Dies at the new theater in Copenhagen

Published: Friday 26 October at 08:23

in Copenhagen at the new theater has been the  skandinavia premiere week of musical Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to Phantom of the Opera. This is musical  worked on several occasions since its premiere in London  two years ago. Love Never Dies takes place 10 years later than Phantom of the Opera. Phantom has left Paris Opera, moved to Coney Island.
But he is still wearing the mask and is equally obsessed with soprano Christine.

In fact we can summarize it all with: good music, weak story but a classy staging. This is a much better musical than the first version I saw  a few years ago in London, a set of which I can promise was not very much to call home about. The authors probably also realized it- a new version, all up and it is this which the Danish now is based on.

Musically, we are in fairly well-known Lloyd Webber-areas. It has the little features of Phantom of the Opera,  a few pure musical quotations, but perhaps also a little Woman in White, his last musical, and the elements of American show music, done in Lloyd Webber's way so as to say. It is perhaps not his strongest compositions, but there is a good deal of memorable sounds.

In Love Never Dies, Phantom moved across the Atlantic to Coney Island where he is pursuing a mixture variety theater and freakshow. There will also Christine which now is celebrated opera star. She has she Raoul, drunken spouse. There is a 10-year-old child, hmmm… who is actually his  father?

At its best, it's a fairly engaging drama. In its worst it is dangerously close to the melodramatic. It is a balancing act, the set manages it the most often.

But, it is difficult to ignore the fact that when you raise the Phantom out of the very special environment of the Paris Opera and sewers under it, that the original one took place in, then it also takes away much of the mystique and the magic around the figure. He will simply not be as intimidating and exciting at Coney Island

"This despite  the new theater making the best it can with the material. It is indeed a grand staging. An abundance of colors, effects and great set design. And in the center Louise Fribo - as Christine - who carries the show on her shoulders. She has all of the compassion and maturity that role requires, and sounds excellent. Tomas Ambt Kofod, the Phantom, which, although he, too, convinces,  by this time may be charged with standing a little in the shade.
