I think they would be stupid to get rid of some of the famous songs

It's not "stupid".

It's an original score, you can't just decide to have other people's songs. Copyright etc.

Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory was the movie musical, we now have a new musical version of the novel called Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.  Separate projects inspired by the same book, this is not an adaption of the 1970s movie musical its an adaption of the book, which is why it also has a different name.

That said, people did miss the songs from the Sister Act movie in the stage show, so it wouldnt hurt to have had some songs in it. But as has been said, its not that straight forward, and its a full original score.

Another big issue is making the old songs "fit". The show will be of an inherently different flavour to the Willy Wonka film, and trying to allow creativity whilst going "but you still need this music at these points" would be difficult. Plus, everyone would say "The songs were good, but I like the way they did it in the film."

Warner Bros owns the film rights to Willy Wonka so the songs could have been kept but I think they want the show to be separate from both films hence a new score by Shaiman and Wittman.

And I Want It All.

But as has been said, this isn't a stage version of the Willy Wonka movie, I'm interested to hear new material. With the subject matter there's so much scope for creativity.

I also think that they have the perfect songwriters onboard too ... I reckon it's going to be superb!
