How come ? Because she will have had enough of playing Elphaba ?

Why would Rachel open the tour? Surely they'll cast a new Elphaba and have her open the tour. I'm sure Rachel has other plans.

I wouldn't say that I would be particularly surprised after she made the comment 'I may be green again soon' but, after the number of names put forward for possible replacements for Rachel, it seems a little surprising to turn down that much talent!

Look at les mis and phantom tours, they could have cast new people however they employed people who had a proven track record of playing the roles and were considered by many to be among the best to have played the role. It's about making it a quality west end standard production. It's also a nice marketing tool to say 'former west end elphaba' or similar. I'd suspect glinda would be new, a I can't think of former glindas who would return for tour, unless it's a former standby or understudy

Her plans could include the tour though, this does seem to have been in the works for a while and I would think there's a decent chance she'll have been given first refusal on it at least.  She's the longest-running West End Elphaba, and she's leaving at a convenient time before the tour to allow for her to have some time off first if she were to do it.

She doesn't seem to be bored of the role, she's award-winning and clearly highly regarded by many fans, critics and the Wicked production team, and she's proven herself in the role and performed several times on major TV shows, never mind getting her break on one herself - she's the biggest 'name' Elphaba London's had apart from Idina in terms of being known outside theatre circles I think - I'm not sure as many people would instantly recognise Kerry, talented and famous though she is.

Makes much more sense in my mind to have Rachel do it if they really want to market this tour as a big deal, and then if she doesn't want to do the whole run then they can bring someone else in down the line.  if this is goling to tour for as long as the Lion King is, then there could be several Elphabas in the end, so even if Rachel only does a venue or 2 there's still plenty of time for others to take the role!

I don't see it doing as long as the lion king, it's no where near as big a draw to the general public. Unless its doing smaller venues too and is downsized.

Going back to Rachel, it could also be a very well paid gig for her, she would be in a strong position to negotiate and if there are no upcoming roles for her then why not. Still needs to pay the bills. The producers in return get someone reliable who can handle the role and will deliver on the road leading to great reviews and word of mouth. Plus, local theatres can promote her reality background to. Whether she ends up in the role or not, time will tell, but there are lots of good reasons why she could do it

I heard it will be Birmingham Hippodrome's summer show in 2014, for how long I don't know.

I believe that the next booking period for the West End show runs until 28th April 2013 - amid rumours of the show possibly closing this could (although I doubt it would happen) fit in with a tour starting shortly after?

Rumours of the show possibly closing? Never heard of those - where have you heard that?
