Yes, no problem with John Partridge taking a weeks holiday from ACL. If he chooses to spend his week off working that is up to him. However, I do have more of a problem in that I understand Leigh Zimmerman is guesting on his cabaret evening on Tuesday . So on that night 2 leading actors will be "off". I have said this before and I will say it again, I have no problem with actors taking holidays or being sick, but I do have a problem with actors who are contracted to do 8 shows a week deciding or being allowed not to appear because they have something better to do that night or simply "don't feel like it"! Where is the discipline? If not from the actors - the producers? The cast In some musicals seem to be on a rota!! Frankly if they cannot "hack" 8 shows a week after professional training they should not be in the business.
I don't see a problem with people taking their days off. I have more of a problem with the random attitude show producers seem to take to telling anyone about who will be there because they have known days off. The internet does exist. If some shows can tell me when the leads holdidays are months ahead, why can't they all? Personally I wouldn't mind Zac being off, but Leigh is a main atraction for me - other people may turn up to see Zac. The attitude of some seems to be you get who we give you and every understudy is as good - which understates the brilliance of the understudy in some cases, and means people miss who they want to see in others.
That randomness seems to carry forward into a lot of casting at the moment. It goes from extreme to extreme - from casting celebrities with no ability to no casts listed at all. You have a few shows cast brilliantly with, new future stars, or major, recognisable, MT names, or celebrity names that work exceptionally well - but fewer of them recently . Shows cast with celebrity names, who are widely seen as inadequate - but might have fans. Shows where no one bothers to put details of the cast out at all. New Shows where no one in the cast is well enough known from other work to make going look attractive. Shows with overseas stars where better known local talent would do as well or better, and, all too often, no sign of lots of the people who most West End MT fans would recognise as worth going to see in anything new .
I don't see any people not up to doing 8 shows. There's major roles that shouldn't be sung 8 times - 6 days a week - Christine gets an alternate for obvious reasons, Elphaba probably and Scaramouche probably should too. There's other roles where there might be different cases on physical grounds.Much of any absence seems explained by leave , acident, or the risks of working in close proximity to others, and an audience bearing the germ of the week.
