How about Jean Genet's The Maids with JC&DC as the employees and ideally Richard Griffiths as their employer? Opening in the Dorfman for a short exclusive boutique run to treat the NT Patrons and Members and to create huge public attention before a swift transfer to the Olivier or Lyttelton. Possibly in a new version.

This is decadent and the wrong way round. Compare with the Royal Court where they choose the play first and then cast it. Seeking a play for JC&DC is surely more of a West End approach. It suggests that the NT is now prioritisng commercial success and potential exploitation over everything else. I can understand why, given the subsidy prospects, but this is an ominous rumour of NT degradation.

The NT has never done it in any different way for star actors, all it indicates is that JC is now elevated to the top rank of actors who get treated in that way. The RSC are no different - do you think they chose Richard II and then thought, now, who can we get to play it ?

Must be something in Pinter for them with his parade of mockney vilains - The Caretaker maybe.

Kleist's Amphitryon with DC in the title role and JC as Sosias, his servant?  Pehaps not what Hytner has in mind.
