It wasn't that empty, I was sat at the back in the stalls and there were a couple of rows in the middle unoccupied. The Saturday mat of the Misanthrope in Southampton, that was empty, there were about 50 people in.

It may have been because Colin Tierney was off, so there was a replacement who went on with the script.

Uh ? No understudy ? Is that common in the provinces ?

It was at the NT Cottesloe. When I saw This House, there were two replacements with scripts.

Oh no! Anyone know if he's back -supposedly  seeing this at Ipswich tomorrow and was looking forward to it.

I think (and correct me if I am wrong) that the Cottesloe doesn't have understudies for any production, never had (as opposed to productions at the Olivier and Lyttelton).

Yes, you're right Poly. Same with the Donmar, Almeida, Royal Court and the Hampstead.

The Menier doesn't either. The director took over a part in a show a couple of years back

The Menier had understudies for Merrily.
