Interestingly The Guardian also gave Viva Forever 3 stars, which sort of makes a mockery of the whole system.

Brantley's review in the NY Times is excellent - thanks for posting it and the others, Front Row Dress!  I'm away for a while but this will be the first show I see when I get back.
Excuse me if I seem jejune
I promise I'll find my marbles soon.

Any news on a possible further life for this production? I would have thought that New York Times review would have got some producers interested...

Have to say, while the cast were uniformly fantastic, I didn't think much of the show itself. The music was generic and completely non-memorable, and it was utterly, cringe-makingly schmaltzy - the bite of the book is nowhere to be seen. I also don't know how much you'd understand the plot if you didn't have a basic knowledge of it in advance; it moved very quickly through major plot-points (inevitably, I suppose, otherwise it would be about six hours long).

But I was definitely in the minority - the rest of the audience were jumping up and cheering at the end; I was very much a lone non-ovator!

I really liked this but more so for the stunning production and the cast all of whom are excellent but especially for Cynthia Erivo and Nicola Hughes. I think CE will really go far, such a great voice and a beautiful face, a real pleasure to watch. The book is poor and towards the end was so saccharin, are the novel and film also like this? ... but that aside everything was so electrifying, if only all theatre could be like this :)

Broadway has been very good to me. But then, I've been very good to broadway.

The novel is definitely worth reading and, while it has it's happy clappy moments, is nowhere near as tooth-achingly sugary as the musical.

I still need to book for this but not sure when I can go, the seats are going fast though so I suppose I'd better hurry up. Wish I had booked a concession seat as now they have all gone!
