Tonight (Thursday 13 June) sees the first of this year's live, free outdoor relays from the Royal Opera House. Kenneth MacMillan's Mayerling is a "dark drama of political intrigue, twisted romance and morbid obsession" and is certainly more dramatic than a good many plays. Edward Watson, scheduled tonight as Crown Prince Rudolf, is terrific in this role.
Tonight's free screenings (which start with an introduction at 7.10pm) are at fourteen locations in England and Wales:
Trafalgar Square, London | Victoria Park, Tower Hamlets | Centenary Square, Bradford | The Hayes, Cardiff | Transport Museum, Hales St, Coventry | Millennium Square, Leeds | Exchange Square, Manchester | Centre Square, Middlesbrough | Guildhall Square, Portsmouth | MediaCityUK, Salford | Castle Square, Swansea | Wharf Green, Swindon | General Gordon Square, Woolwich | Walthamstow Town Sq, Waltham Forest
I strongly recommend Mayerling as an ideal dance drama for playgoers.
