For anyone who is interested in a fun bargain afternoon out, with a bit of history:

The Polari Magazine production In The Life: A History of Polari plays for one exclusive performance at London’s St James Theatre on Sunday June 23 at 3.30 pm.

On the dark streets of post-war 1950s London, a powdered queen screeched, “vada the lallies on the omee ajax”, and in so doing used a secret language, Polari, the roots of which can be traced all the way back to 11th century Saxon England.

In The Life is a staged radio performance that marries narration and sketches to explore how Polari, the rich mix of words that made up this secret verbal handshake, came into being.
Long before the characters Julian and Sandy used it on the 1960s BBC series Round the Horne, Polari was only understood by the initiated. It allowed them to talk openly about what they thought of the man next to them, what they did last night, and who they did it to, all without being understood by the average person on the street.

In The Life is written by Christopher Bryant, the editor of Polari Magazine. It features the acting talents of Steve Nallon, the voice behind the iconic Spitting Image puppets of Margaret Thatcher and the Queen Mother; Roger Lloyd-Thompson, the man behind Dexter the Celebrity Hairdresser; David Charles, whose many TV credits include playing Charles Hawtrey in Kenneth Williams: Fantabulosa!; and Polari’s own Bryon Fear, who once played opposite Johnny Depp in From Hell. Award-winning author of London Triptych, Jonathan Kemp, narrates, with music provided by London’s bubbliest musical entertainer, Champagne Charlie!

Troll along, and nellyarda to how the omee-palones of a bygone era endured in a time when homosexual acts were illegal.

Apologies for the cut & paste job,
