For ten years we have looked daily into how best to help our fellow actors reach the heart of their talent. Our aim is to offer practical training support which swiftly develops the actor’s talent into a powerful and individual technique.
Our courses are designed to meet the demands of busy modern actors who want to deliver under any circumstances at a moment’s notice. You will learn more about the craft of acting in one working week than you would learn in two years at drama school. This may sound like an impossibly huge claim but it is the experience of many who have been able to make the comparison.
The training is suitable for anyone from any background.
Having begun to work from the heart of your talent there will be ample opportunities to expand your skill set. There are many short courses available which focus on specific aspects of the craft.
You will also become part of an ever-growing network of actors out of which is emerging new theatre companies, film productions and casting opportunities.
We run three levels of the 9 day course — which cover the fundamental basics of our approach to acting. We encourage students to take them in the sequential order however in certain circumstances we are able to let actors jump onto a more advanced course depending on their circumstances and experience.
9 Day Course 1 - The Freedom to Act
This course covers the fundamental principles of the Meisner Technique as it relates to our work at The Actors' Temple. As a result, students will start to develop the ability to listen and answer their acting partner truthfully. These twin skills of listening and answering represent the fundamental building blocks of all good acting. To assist them in the development of these skills, students will be introduced to the foundation exercise known as 'Repetition' and will also see how this simple but effective tool can be extended to support basic improvisational circumstances involving two people. The skill of improvisation is one that is highly prized by actors and directors alike and is a commonly featured component in many auditions too.
Students need only bring themselves, no preparation required.
9 Day Course 2 - Imaginary Circumstances and Relationship Work
The next stage is to add a specific and increasingly complex set of circumstances into the mix, as students begin to move further away from their actual life situations and experiences. Entering real improvised situations with the addition of an imaginary set of circumstances in the form of chosen relationships and events, students will begin to experience the power of suggestion and the immediacy and fullness of their behaviour in response. Students will begin to truly experience instinctual acting without thought or plan which is both exhilarating for actor and audience alike.
Students need only bring themselves, no preparation required.
9 Day Course 3 - Scenes
All students will be given a short scene before the first day of the course and asked to learn their lines. Initially the director will work like a teacher and take you quickly and enjoyably through the essentials of preparing to play a scene including the improvisation covered on the previous two courses and basic analysis of the text . As the course progresses it will become more like rehearsal culminating in a performance of the scene.
Scenes will be allocated at least one week before the start of the course, lines will need to be learned by the first day of the course.
