One of the joys of a democracy based forum! Seeing as quite a few people are [topic="757"=]somewhat miffed[/topic] at the return of video on the WOS main page, I decided to create a little Poll.

Let the vote begin!

I can avoid the homepage but more to the point what the hell is the repeated strain that now appears to be polluting the discussion board?  They obviously wanted to find a way to get me off the forum and they've done it.  rolleyes.gif

Edit:  ohmy.gif  I didn't read the question properly and though it was asking if you want the video so I voted no when I mean yes.  I don't want the video, the music or any other kind of naff auditory or visual interference!

Unfortunately the people who are most fed up with advertising videos on the home page of this site, probably have gone elsewhere for their theatre info and discussion. Those who have left already, won't be counted in this poll.

I've given up attempting to read the home page because of this video nuisance. I hope the discussion forum isn't going to be polluted with the stuff too. I know WOS needs advertising revenue, but surely it can come in a form that doesn't drive users away?!!!

What's really good about the lastest advert is that there is NO button to stop it.

Its way too intrusive and just makes me think why bother with WoS.

Where I used to work we were allowed to access the Internet for personal use, but because of people watching videos on YouTube the company prohibited the viewing of any streaming content such as videos or music. The problem was one of bandwidth: someone browsing normal web pages put a very light load on the company network, but someone watching a video hammered the network into the ground and slowed down everyone else's access. (A typical video may be 100 times the size of a web page, so one person downloading a video caused as  much load as 100 other people.)

So anyone working in such a company who happened to wander on to the WoS website would immediately get into trouble. I was lucky: as a system administrator I had my own link to the Internet through another route (though I still blocked the video; the only advantage I had was that I didn't leave any sign that I'd downloaded it at all before I blocked it). Other people didn't have that option, and I'm certain we weren't the only company with a corporate network where such acceptable use policies exist.
I have always hated eggs. I remember back when I was a sperm I tried to head-butt one. It did not end well.

Again this will not help those at work much, but many firewalls can be set to block these adverts (without affecting the rest of the page content).

Mine - Outpost firewall - is very effective - to the point that I was not even aware until reading this thread that there was a video ad on the front page. There are little bits of text in the < > brackets which I assume must be where the video appears!  wink.gif

So many postings on this subject, but where's the courtesy response from WOS? No explanation, no justification, nothing - and that goes right back to the Billies Joel and Elliot ads (smoke, anyone?). The editorial team always quick to add a cheery message to a thread when it suits them, but their consistent approach with this wretched little cash cow has always been the crash of deafening silence. In any other field this discourtesy would be considered unprofessional; but hey, who's accountable to anyone any more?

Nothing I see on any of my regular sites offends me more than this long-term, high-handed snub from the friendly 'Hi all' editorial team of Whatsonstage.

In previous incarnations of this thread, the WOS team have claimed they receive many emails from people who love listening to the same snatch of music every time they visit the site (though not one of these people has ever posted to that effect). What has happened to all these sopporters, I wonder?

Though at least we don't have to suffer those swimming pool ads anymore.

I have no problem with the adverts whatsoever, I quite like them. HOWEVER I do think its wrong that there isnt a stop or mute button for people who dont like them. Or have it like lovetheatre.com where you press a play button if you want to see it. Im glad that the pop up adverts have gone though, they were very annoying, especially as they werent theatre related

I do find it odd that so many people dont just mute their computer, I find the general clicky noises etc computers make everytime you do something or the noises when pop ups come up more annoying.

They have responded in previous threads on this subject. But I agree a new response as its a new board wouldnt do any harm
