I would pick anywhere downstairs over the upstairs.  You would hope they have designed the set so that everyone upstairs sees everything that's happening on stage, but there were occasions when it looked as if the upstairs view may have been a bit restricted.

"It's going to be quite stark and bare and brutal" says director Ivo van Hove in the Guardian preview.    This production certainly has a stark visual style with only a few essential props and everyone barefoot.  This was my first experience of the play.  I would probably have enjoyed a more traditional production on my first visit as the minimalist staging doesn't always make it clear where scenes are set if you're unfamiliar with the piece. Those familiar with the play may find this fresh take quite refreshing.  Very strong performances all round. Plenty took to their feet tonight.  It plays 1hr 55 mins straight through.  V. attentive audience tonight, thankfully.

In the absence of a "choose your seat" option it seems worthwhile loading your basket with a number of tickets for the date you want.  The "best available" seat I was initially offered was an OK seat on one side.  After loading 7 tickets into my basket I was offered a prime seat on the front row middle!

The original cast are now well into their 70s.  Is this going to be some kind of reunion on a Saga holiday?  It looks like Joanna Van Gyseghem didn't feel the need to top up her pension.

Royal Court Friends membership is £25.  The main advantage is advanced access to tickets for the £10 Mondays in the downstairs theatre (50% of tickets go on sale in advance, 50% sold on the day).  Membership used to give advanced access to £10 tickets for the upstairs theatre but that stopped a while ago.  Also gives 10% discount in the bar.
