Topics I've Started

The Illusionists

04 October 2013 - 12:46 PM

Has anyone seen this....it certainly looks flashy and slick; whether that's a good thing or not I don't know. Hoping to see them in Manchester tonight.

Broadway Peterborough

16 September 2013 - 08:25 AM

I see there is a season of Kenwright productions heading to the broadway. I have only worked there once and unless they have done something remarkable to the theatre, well the stage, how on earth are they going to fit shows like Cabaret and Evita on that stage - it is the widest and shallowest stage I know, an ex cinema. It would be a shame to see such productions without their sets or in heavily revised stagings. Anyone involved?

The Actors' Church - St Pauls, Covent Garden

13 September 2013 - 11:59 AM

I was at the memorial service to Ray Harryhausen at the Actors' church yesterday - a joyous uplifting service, in the beautiful venue - thanks to the staff, and organist and amazing pianist. All of us were moved and cheered by an appropriate celebration.

A Little Night Music

13 August 2013 - 10:47 PM

Just trying to watch the infamous film of A Little Night Music but the straight, literal approach, the awful dubbing, the bright lighting, the clumsy camera work and darn zooms, the lack of any film grammar, and uncomfortable singing are making this almost unwatchable. When will film directors learn that they have to find a filmic equivalent of the theatricality of musicals and their conventions. This film is something of a disaster really. Time for a remake perhaps.

Steel Pier

13 August 2013 - 04:57 PM

Has this glorious but flawed Kander and Ebb musical ever been performed in the UK in any shape or form. I loved the production on broadway and the score has some great numbers, but it is trying to be 'They shoot horses don't they' but instead of getting gritty they throw in a supernatural element that rather derails it, and also the elimination structure means we lose some interesting characters along the way. But a big dance heavy show.
