"Following a successful UK tour of Porgy & Bess in 2012, Cape Town Opera come to The Lowry for the first time with their adaptation of the 1927 Broadway musical, Show Boat.

Set in Americaís Deep South, the story begins in 1887 on the Cotton Blossom show boat as it sets sail on the Mississippi River. Following the lives of the performers, dock workers, musicians and stagehands over a period of forty years, Show Boat is rich with nostalgia, humour, love stories and well-loved melodies including Olí Man River and Canít Help Loviní Dat Man.

With all the glamour of the old American-style big family musical and a cast of over 50 talented performers, Cape Town Opera lovingly bring this classic musical back to life alongside the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra."

No information on what it is.... Anyone know?

Blood Brothers Tour

06 September 2013 - 06:31 PM

Saw this in Manchester (Salford) this week.

Oh dear.  I wish I hadn't.

It's a good few years since my first time and I wasn't that impressed then, but this time was worse. Maureen Nolan. Terrible. Seemed to be doing an impersonation of Cilla Black crossed with a strangled chicken. Now I like Cilla's early stuff very much but even her most ardent fan would admit the theme tune to Surprise Surprise wasnt her finest moment. That tight-throated squawk. Dreadful.

Micky's decline was hammed up so far that I thought he was taking the ...erm Micky and the other one was no better.

Standing ovation and about 5 returns to the stage by the cast. It took 3 for Maureen to regain her composure and crack a smile such was the depth of her emotion. Poor thing.

I posted on FB when I got home and got soundly trounced for not loving it.

Clearly it's just me?

Go Whistle!

02 August 2013 - 11:12 PM

Im not sure why, but I cannot get the theme from Whistle Down The Wind out of my brain at the moment. In the bath, in breaks between work, humming (or whistling) under my breath. I've never seen it so I have no idea where this has come from.

I loved Tina Arena's version, but is that great song indicative of the rest of the show? Which of you saw it? Was it a dud? Is it coming back? I can't even find much in the way of reviews.

Fill me in  please :0)
