I'd better retract my post from yesterday then, as most people seem to think it's fine. I had two issues with it, apart from the stealing electricity point brought up already: 1) leaving a phone with a trailing wire attached lying in an aisle where people would not be expecting it is a trip hazard & 2) in a theatre as old as Her Majesty's goodness knows what state wiring could be in so it might potentially cause a fire risk. Sorry if I sound like a health & safety lecture.

No, I agree with you.  Wouldn't dream of charging my phone in a theatre!  Though if it's now acceptable maybe I'll bring a toaster next time I go to the theatre, and make myself an interval snack.

I love overproducing!  You see some amazing productions that way.  Huge budgets blown on excessive sets that were never going to be financially viable.  But some amazing theatrical memories!

In the front row at ICS tonight (so only 20 which, given the view, has to be one of the best bargains in the West End).  Thoroughly enjoyed Act I, but it's definitely a show of two halves and I remember Act II being a lot less interesting.  Still no Upper Circle!

I'd really welcome the idea, or something similar. In an ideal world someone would strike a deal with Sondheim to do all his shows across a 2 year period, using the same company.

I guess that's one way to get Sondheim playing at a theatre for more than two months!

A shame to see this show go.  I saw it 6 times and my only problem was with the police interviews, which seemed to go on forever and weren't very musically engaging.  Having said that, they told a very important part of the story, so not sure how else they could have been done.  Otherwise I loved it.  And 'Too Close to the Flame' is a remarkable piece of music.  Would have enjoyed seeing this many more times in the future.

That's what gets you? I dunno, the thing that struck me was that maybe shooting someone dead for texting is perhaps a LITTLE MUCH.

Well, that is a good point, but I also found myself thinking "he shouldn't have been texting at all."

Saw the show for the 2nd time tonight (having seen a preview last year).  Still don't think some of the songs are as good as they could (should) have been, but it's one hell of an entertaining night out!

I know that Nelson Mandela was a hell of a fella,
but let's face it, he just couldn't sing

Fixed :-)

I have to say, your ability to rationalize away all the faults and deficiencies of this show impresses me more than the show itself does.  Happy New Year.

I have to say I fully agree with what Sjh13 said.  When I first saw the show I was initially thrown by the change in musical style as this is not typical Lloyd Webber at all, but I soon became hooked on the music and I think the story is fascinating.  I also greatly admire his reasons for writing this show, and even if it does close in March I think it's been very worthwhile.

There was a fight in the foyer of Stephen Ward on Wednesday.  Didn't see how it started, but the guys were quite old and I'm sure one said "he punched me in the balls!"

I bought a singing camel at 'Joseph', a football at 'The Beautiful Game', and a jar of jam at 'By Jeeves'... but I'm drawing the line at the 50 'Stephen Ward' riding crop! (or even the silk blindfold) lol

Well, what a turn around from the posts at the very start of this topic!

Is there some kind of quota or limit on the number of people who can write musicals?  Can I not write one until ALW retires?

Didn't realise it worked that way!
