I actually think he is the weakest thing in the show, too young & not vocally strong enough. He's only there because he's a "name".
A replacement might be nice if he's busy...

All of the above makes sense and I agree it was a complex situation, but money clearly changed hands as well as information.

I thought he was incredibly patient.

Do you think Brian Conley is going to make it across that tightrope...?

Yes, I found the whole Happy Days section rather put on for the cameras, although that producer must be delighted with the publicity. She seemed incredibly green though.

Agree about the Mamma Mia set, it used to be so beautiful and has lost something in the move.

As for Cameron, I actually found his involvement fascinating. It showed a great sense of pride & attention to detail in the production, which I think is a good thing. However, sweeping in at the last minute (having graciously "cleared his diary") and making such dramatic changes seemed rude and disrespectful to the director, I'm all for Cameron's involvement & I think he knows what he's talking about but he could have handled that better. Lucky to have a patient director.

Delighted to see that Merrily We Roll Along won, quite an achievement as it was up against Book of Mormon etc

Saw Maria Friedman doing a Masterclass at St James theatre yesterday. It opened with a chat between her & Mark Shenton, during which she talked about Merrily, of course, & admitted to popping into Vue Islington on Thursday to see how full the screening was (she said 3/4 full) - although every screening in New York sold out & they had to put on extra ones. She herself had gone to see Captain Phillips though...!

The masterclass (on cabaret performance) was fascinating; to watch her dissect & deconstruct every word of a song, to see her play about with the phrasing & expression until maximum possible effect was achieved, and to see the passion and understanding she brings to her work. If Merrily was directed with that amount of commitment, sensitivity & attention to detail, you can see why it worked so well.

Saw it yesterday & really enjoyed it; beautifully staged with a young, energetic cast & the choreography & dancing is superb. I wasn't sure about Sam Attwater's vocal range, which seemed a bit limited, although pleasant enough. Helena Blackman really shines, I thought her vocals were flawless & quite beautiful.
I remembered the film being a bit dull with a few good bits (the dancing) but actually found this very enjoyable.

Peter Mullan good as Rab but less of a singer than Pierce Brosman in Mama Mia.

Went to the matinee yesterday & really enjoyed it. Got the lowest priced seats on back row of the stalls & were moved forwards by a helpful usher, I'd say the stalls were about 1/3 empty. I think some people moved down from upstairs too.
Such a shame as it is very sweet & clever; the cast are so talented & I found it so much more moving than the film. It is a bit "different", but in a good way. I think this difference is what the masses may find off-putting though, the publicity has been so low-key you're not sure what you're getting or if you'll like it.
But I did & will recommend it to everyone.
The accapella version of Gold was absolutely breathtaking.
