Loopyjohn, what a great review, you echoed pretty much what I felt after seeing the show.

for me the first few songs are pretty poor, theres a few good servicable songs then a few standout songs. as i say, i enjoyed this production but i kept wanting to know more about barnum, more story. and theres no real lapse of time to show whats happening when.i remember being bored in the 1980s production and the story hasnt improved here despite what was promised.
I felt exactly the same - so much so that I came out of the theatre and downloaded one of the biographies on Kindle as I wanted to find out more as I felt the show only skimmed the surface of his life

I really can't say too much about the show apart from the fact that I was expecting so much and came away with so little - disappointed in this production would be an understatement.

The leads had no charisma, the 'tent theatre' I thought was far to big for the production (if it transfers I think it will benefit from being in a much smaller venue), there wasn't one song that was memorable apart from the chhhuuune that Torvil and Dean skated too. There was no story as such just a mish mash of bits of his life put together on stage.

However on saying all of that I thought the ensemble were sensational, tumbling, silks, acrobatics, dancing etc - fabulous.

In the first half we learnt about various crew members from the high ranking officers to the lowly stokers and the class difference between the 1st, 2nd and 3rd class passengers whilst the 2nd half of the show dealt with the sinking of the ship itself,  for me the 2nd half was about 20 minutes too long and I found myself wishing that they would just hurry up and get the sinking over and done with :( It was very hot in theatre which didn't help. It was very well staged but  I felt it lacked emotion and there was no sense of panic as the ship was sinking.
There were a lot of familiar faces in the cast, so that was nice to see and the cast play a multitude of roles and work extremely hard but the sound wasn't great in parts and I couldn't make out what was being said and sung some of the time.
I know I am in the minority about this show - I'm very glad I went but don't think I will be tempted to go back again
