Just back from an extraordinary evening at the Young Vic. Juliet S was outstanding, stunning and unforgettable.  Thankfully she wasn't overshadowed (quite) by the cougher whose emissions ruffled my hair every 60 seconds or the person next to them who repeated the word "Willie" every single time JS said it.  With a snigger.  Every.  Single.  Time.

Saw this last night - the crowd went WILD and by the looks of other reports this is not an uncommon occurance.  The reviews (which I hadn't read until after seeing the show) were super snooty - they didn't seem to like the 'American-ness' of it all.  OK - the grit, the pain and, indeed, the central love affair weren't as explicit as the book/film and we could, perhaps, have done with more of that to truly understand Celie - but there's a lot to pack into two and a half hours!  But the music's terrific - the performances are committed to the point of no return - and the sweep of emotion really gets you in the end.  Surely a transfer's do-able, cost-wise?  Surely word of mouth would sustain a reasonable run, if the critics won't?  A thrilling evening - would definitely go again if I could.
