Saw this last night - the crowd went WILD and by the looks of other reports this is not an uncommon occurance. The reviews (which I hadn't read until after seeing the show) were super snooty - they didn't seem to like the 'American-ness' of it all. OK - the grit, the pain and, indeed, the central love affair weren't as explicit as the book/film and we could, perhaps, have done with more of that to truly understand Celie - but there's a lot to pack into two and a half hours! But the music's terrific - the performances are committed to the point of no return - and the sweep of emotion really gets you in the end. Surely a transfer's do-able, cost-wise? Surely word of mouth would sustain a reasonable run, if the critics won't? A thrilling evening - would definitely go again if I could.
