I dunno, I don't think Hendrix is wooden. He is only ever stiff and uptight when Digby is meant to be, his scenes with Rosalie Craig are quite lovely.

I agree and disagree.  He is uptight, as Digby should be, as you point out, but even after that, there is never the release of emotion or energy that makes one love Rosalie so much.  It is like he forgets to give a performance.  Apparently, Hadley Fraser was to play the role when originally planned.  I would be excited to see his playing of the role.

Back from this for a second viewing tonight.

Rosalie Craig a wonder.  She gets so much expression into her performance, both physically and vocally.

Nick Hendrix is still very wooden.  He never relaxes, whereas Rosalie is so effortless.  Was he this bad in his previous plays?

Agree with you all about Clive Rowe's big number.  It is just painful, and spoils the largely greater second half.

Such a shame it has not extended.  It has been a beautiful treat at the National Theatre.

Russell Beale's biggest actor twitch is "the rubbing of the back thigh".

Look out for it.

He does it in every production.

A lot.

Saw this on Friday night.  Janie Dee not in top form, apparently struggling with a severe cold all week.  She was breathy and dangerously hoarse in some songs, but still managed to act the socks off the rest of the cast.  Then she fell over at the curtain call too.  What drugs have they got her on?  We really appreciated that she was on though.  Really loved seeing this show again.
