#295880 Hairspray @ Leicester Curve

I didnt read it that way

Mentions how in this production velma and edna are portrayed, sets are flimsy etc

.'However, for all its robustness, it requires a delicate balance and Paul Kerryson's new production at Leicester, with its flimsy, flat sets and front-facing performances, has strayed too far from the tone of the original movie.'

'Here, that producer is determinedly respectable, but not monstrously so; her hair neatly curled, not a towering backcomb. Likewise, Tracy's mum, Edna, originally played by Divine, shifts into a panto dame mould, as Damian Williams – his voice like a foghorn – makes no attempt at feminity, playing her like Fred Flintstone in a frock.'

No I agree too. Im usually someone that would prefer an actor who can sing than the other way around but mama rose is a role that really needs both. She didn't show a vocal range in sweeney that suggests she can do it but she may surprise everyone

#295093 Is There Room For New Work In The West End?

Posted Titan on 04 March 2014 - 04:37 PM

Stephen Ward could have succeeded if it had been a great show.  Plenty of difficult subject matters have made it in the past

I do think though in this current climate people want to be entertained and escape for a few hours.  Especially when paying out so much money, they want to know they wil have a good time

Its a bit hard to take Tim Rice seriously when his 'original' idea is a book and movie adaptation with a fairly standard type of score.  There really wasnt much originality on show.

There is room for original new work, but when the work is good enough and 'work' as a piece. Its also about producers carefully handling their show and not rushing it through (e.g. Spring Awakening transfer)

FHTE and Stephen Ward both needed more work and the general public opinion was neither were good enough.

#294961 Disney's Frozen To Be Adapted For Stage?

The movies massive success surprises me a bit.  Dont get me wrong, I really enjoyed it and am I big Disney fan, but I wouldnt put it quite up there with the golden age of  Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King etc.

As for 'Let it Go', again surprised at how much of a stand out hit its become.

I agree on Oliver Thompsett actually (although Ive not seen him in a role that he shone in as i only saw him in Wicked)

Oliver Thornton is another who has been so bad in so many things but was one of the best things about Priscilla

yeah Mark Evans cant act for toffee everytime ive seen him but it was always to be expected he would take over

Id hoped Ashley Day would get a chance as the lead as he really does give an amazing performance.  And I hadnt been a fan of his before

#294602 Matthew Morrison And Laura Michelle Kelly Workshop Finding Neverland

Posted Titan on 28 February 2014 - 06:09 AM

I hope Morrison doesnt transfer with it, since making it big on glee his performances have become so cheesy and self indulgent.

I worry with Gary Barlow on board, and comments made by Harvey,  they are aiming for an upbeat family show which the movie really wasnt
