Job description: WhatsOnStage seeks an experienced and passionate web journalist to contribute fresh and original multimedia content, manage the long and short lead features schedule, and help grow and consolidate WhatsOnStage.com’s position as the UK’s leading theatre website.

The company: Founded in 1996 to connect the theatre industry with a mass consumer audience, WhatsOnStage.com is the UK’s biggest and best dedicated theatre website. It is ranked number 1 in the UK by Alexa and number 2 by Hitwise amongst all performing arts websites, and named one of the top 100 arts tweeters by The Times. It is the trusted source for theatre information and editorial content.

The company also founded and presents the annual WhatsOnStage Awards. Now in their 13th year, they are the only major UK theatre awards decided by the public, with over 60,000 people voting each year. The company also runs the WhatsOnStage Theatre Club and hosts year-round events to major new West End productions, including post-show Q&As with high-profile stars.

WhatsOnStage Ltd was acquired in January 2013 by TheaterMania.com, Inc., the pioneering US-based theatre content, ticketing and services company. The merger of these two respected entertainment brands forms the first dedicated transatlantic digital theatre media group, serving the world’s two great theatre capitals, London and New York, and markets throughout the United States and United Kingdom.

In order to accelerate its leadership position in the market and maximise the revenue potential of the new website, WhatsOnStage is expanding its editorial team and is seeking an experienced, knowledgeable and passionate Content and Features Editor. The position would suit a highly organised editor accustomed to working on long lead (print-style) deadlines with the ability to adapt to short lead online opportunities and apply a range of digital enhancements.

Main responsibilities of the role


• Take responsibility for the features section, generating fresh, interesting and shareable long and short lead features for a theatre-savvy audience and beyond

• Manage forward features schedule, liaising with marketing, ticketing and sales departments to maximise SEO, engagement and monetisation

• Contribute to all areas of editorial across the site - news, gossip, interviews, reviews

• Liaise with editorial team, including freelance contributors and regional editors, to ensure broad coverage of UK theatre

• Closely monitor theatre news and broader developments in the theatre industry, helping ensure WhatsOnStage.com is always the first with breaking news

• Source, edit and upload original video and audio content, working with freelancers when required

• Assist with coverage of annual events, notably the Edinburgh Festivals and WhatsOnStage Awards

• Attend weekly editorial meetings  

Social Media

• Help grow WhatsOnStage.com’s existing social media presence

• Spot trends in social media, evaluating emerging platforms in line with the business’ long and short term objectives

• Where necessary liaise with other members of the team regarding best social media practice, helping promote all sections of the business

• Provide social media and editorial coverage of live events as required, eg live blogging press launches, outings and awards ceremonies

• Ensure best utilisation of existing social media platforms including Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Pinterest, Google+ and iTunes

• Regularly monitor our lively discussion forum and liaise with moderators


• Collate statistics for monthly editorial, social media and traffic reports

• Be an ambassador for WhatsOnStage.com in the theatre community, attend press and networking events where possible

• Attend and help staff WhatsOnStage.com Outings across the capital

• Be prepared to work outside normal office hours as required

• Ensure the company brand is used consistently across all communications

• Work with internal developers and designers on ongoing improvements to the WhatsOnStage.com site

• Stay abreast of general technology trends and advise WhatsOnStage.com how these can be harnessed for the benefit of the business

• Be a major player in the growth of traffic to WhatsOnStage.com – help make the UK’s leading theatre website even bigger, better and more useful to theatregoers

Personal Specification


• A demonstrable interest in and passion for theatre

• Fully computer literate and numerate using packages including Microsoft Word and Excel

• Experience using a CMS system to upload and edit content

• Excellent editing and writing skills

• A strong understanding of best social media practice

• The ability to work to tight deadlines and manage a diverse range of simultaneous projects

• Familiarity with web analytics tools

• Educated to degree standard with excellent written and spoken communication skills with the ability to present at a senior level

• Proven track record growing website traffic and subscribers over time


• Experience of developing editorial and social media strategy and reporting results back to business

• Experience of managing online projects and interacting with designers and developers

• Video and audio editing ability

• Strong contacts within the theatre and media industries
