"translations" (Brian Friel) Question

11 March 2014 - 06:20 PM

I'm thinking of seeing the touring production of Translations, which has had excellent reviews.

However, I'm hesitating as I saw (some of) it at the National Theatre - probably back in the early 80's and didn't "get" it at all, to the extent that I left at the interval.  What I'm wondering is whether Brian Friel's work is more likely to appeal to an older person, in which case I might now enjoy it, or whether his plays are of a particular type, in which case it may be that I simply don't appreciate them.

Have others here found their views of plays or playwrights changing with time?

Finian's Rainbow, Union Theatre

15 February 2014 - 11:34 PM

This has just started (from Wed 12, I think) at the Union Theatre and is silly, but light-hearted and fun.  Also a huge cast - possibly the largest I've ever seen at this venue - who did very well to manoeuvre in so small a space without bumping into each other or the audience.

Tonight At 8.30 (Blanche Mcintyre For Ett, Touring)

26 January 2014 - 09:17 AM

Interesting to see that Blanche McIntyre, whose production of Ciphers for the Bush/Exeter Northcott/OJO is currently at the Bush, is due to direct 9 one-act plays by Noel Coward soon.  The plays are grouped in threes and it seems that each venue will have one "trilogy day".

Meet Me In St Louis, Landor Theatre

13 December 2013 - 01:06 PM

Previews began on Wed 11, but no thread here yet, let alone comments.  Has anyone seen it, please, or booked to do so?  I'm very keen, but will have trouble fitting it in.

Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, Globe Theatre

25 November 2013 - 08:11 PM

Interesting programme for the opening season, including the rarely-performed "The Knight Of The Burning Pestle".  Glad to see this is an enclosed building, as I wouldn't fancy the Globe itself in January!
