As fringefan says, theatres serve catchment areas. The nearest producing theatres to the Palace Theatre Watford (except for London, whose population has a good choice of theatres) are the:

Watermill, near Newbury (63 miles)
Mercury, Colchester (76 miles)
Royal, Northampton (52 miles)

So, the Palace is the nearest producing theatre for everyone living within thirty to forty miles in every direction except London, and it would be a significant loss to its catchment population if it ceased production in its location.

The other point is that town centres are very good locations for theatres because they are easily accessible to many people by public transport, and theatres in town centres are highly visible to large general populations who reside and work in the immediate vicinity.

Because SOLT (Society Of London Theatre) is a closed group rewarding its own members. This set of awards is specifically established as a group of theatres getting together to puff themselves. That's their entire purpose. It's nothing to do with celebrating theatre or UK theatre or British theatre. It's purely about the promotion of theatre produced and presented by its own members (and affiliates in the case of one single award!)

SOLT was originally called SWET (Society of West End Theatre) but renamed because of the malodorous acronym, and because "West End Theatre" trumpeted the closed nature of the organisation, whereas "London Theatre" is better at misleading the general public to assume that these are open awards.

They then nicknamed their awards the Oliviers, to associate themselves with someone the general public at the time still recognised as a great actor, principally because they'd seen him in some old movies. As someone posted yesterday, time has moved on, and Laurence Olivier's acting is now more generally perceived as a mannered embarrassment to contemporary theatre. So SOLT will probably soon rebrand themselves again, to perpetuate their dissemblance in misrepresenting themselves as rewarding the best of theatre.

I'd go further than you, to point out that much theatre is international. (I don't mean "international" in the Mark Shenton sense of West End & Broadway). Away from the West End, artists and companies are collaborating across borders, presenting the local globally, and engaging with the world to the world.

"Delusions of grandeur" is a bit unfair. This play has been a box office sell-out at Hampstead Theatre and it's desirable to extend its life so that more people can see it. The same situation holds with The Scottsboro Boys at the Young Vic.

The problem is that the only option for extensions of popular productions in small subsidised London theatres seems to be the commercial West End, which I agree is the kiss of death for most of these shows.

It would be far better for most of these productions if there were a network of modern halfway-house theatres of maybe 500 or 600 seats, possibly with some limited subsidy, where popular subsidised productions from London and the rest of the UK could transfer for extended runs, while there is an audience for them.

The Young Vic practice of second runs at home for some of their productions is a good step in this direction, but it's obviously limited by the theatre's requirement to keep up a stream of new producions.

Oh, Andromeda Dench, dear, dear! When you're there, it's blindingly obvious to everyone when it's affectionate and when it's mocking. You don't need to be an X Factor nerd, just to have the average familiarity with it that is shared by the vast majority of the UK population. If you're genuinely as ignorant of it as you claim, you'll obviously get less out of it, but there are very few other people like you. This show is a popular entertainment themed on a public phenomenon that almost everyone has got enotionally involved with at some point and which sends itself up in its formulaic pomposity and opens itself to affectionate mockery which it's quite robust enough to withstand. The vast majority of the UK will lap up the references, but you may have opted out with your disinterest in X Factor.

I saw the Saturday matinee preview and enjoyed it! I most liked the humour of the direct references to X Factor judges, compere, past contestants, format, etc. and of course the great Simon himself - no problem for me with anything being too obvious, The "panto" aspect of the show was very appealing to me. I also very much liked several of the more quirky set pieces, such as the finales of both acts, and the audition close-up, and the flower. It was like a sophisticated variety show.

The characters were fine, although the plot is weak, and I'd prefer it if the variety, panto and affectionately humorous elements were even further featured, and the plot were to dwindle more.

The music seemed mostly passable, but I don't really know about such things! The choreography was very pedestrian at times - too like Britain's Got Talent.

I don't really care what most of the critics say about this, but I do hope that the show succeeds in appealing to good audiences. The attitude of the X Factor tv audience - looking to appreciate good talent, but delighted to have a good laugh at the self-important and the deluded - should match the audience for good popular theatrical entertainment.
