i dont think its as big a deal in the uk as latino actresses are in far shorter supply.

while race is a small factor in the show it isnt really about race, its the gang warfare and the show loses none of its power

the late 90s uk tour and west end transfer had katie knight adams as maria and anna jane casey as anita

im just glad the leads are a vast improvement on the last tour
The Sharks are Puerto Rican and that actually does matter a lot - when they sing 'one look at us and they judge twice' that's one of the many foundations for their desperate situation and the gang warfare that results from it. While it's true that there are a lot less Hispanic or Latino performers in the UK than in the US, Maria, Anita and the others are iconic roles. There are many, many parts for young white sopranos and this simply isn't one of them. The fact that they did it in the 90s doesn't mean they should continue it.

A major production in the US would take heavy flack for not casting a Latina as Maria.  I'm sure Katie will sing the role beautifully, but just saying.
Agreed. I was quite shocked when I heard, it's such an iconic part and shouldn't be whitewashed.

#270747 Musicals You Would Love To See Come To The West End?

A proper, full scale production of Ragtime. Perhaps Opera North, with their history of musicals, should venture there.

Lots of people didn't share your opinions though .. Hence the short runs..

With Top Hat, Rain and Chorus Line all on the way what is going to be the next West End big dancey show? Ok, so no Westminster Council By-law demands one but surely the market is there for one or ideally several ... I’m guessing Stephen Ward won’t have tap-dancing Osteopaths?!

The open call for Newsies looked to me like a show put on so that the producers can say they tried casting British, and have found a few, but need to bring over Americans for key roles.

#270617 What Is The Christmas Musical At The Menier Chocolate Factory This Year?

I really liked it, the production was wrong, but I think the score and book were good. A smaller production could really help the show

I hate the actor musician shows. It's nothing more than a gimmick. It means awful compromise - the score is played badly.. And the acting/singing suffers and forget being swept away with the story when suddenly the lead starts blowing a tuba.

Forbidden broadway parodied it brilliantly when they did their version of the recent NY Company.

It looks like a mash up of the original stuff Dewynters did and a shot from "Apocalypse Now".  That was probably the intention.  I wonder how much creatives charge for this stuff?  I'm clearly in the wrong job....

Oh really? I had assumed Killian was a lead! Damn.

And it is on at the Shaftesbury... Home to many epic musicals like Napoleon.. The Far Pavilions...

I assume by the comments in that he hopes to throw his hat into the Miss Saigon Chris ring. I hope not

I was under the impression that previews began 25th November, also 10 days seems like a very short preview period!

I have a feeling he's going to make the same mistake he did with LND... open it too fast and not allow sufficient time to iron out the creases...
