Merchant Of Venice - St Leonard's Church Shoreditch

10 April 2014 - 12:56 PM

James and Richard Burbage are buried at this church, as is Richard Tarlton. The remains of The Curtain theatre are nearby where Shakespeare's company played prior to moving to the Globe.

The Merchant of Venice is a bit of rarity these days for obvious reasons so this is a chance to see it.

Sadly the quality of acting is not high.

Downtown Abbey

20 December 2013 - 08:57 AM

I was watching Downton Abbey last night (I am weeks behind) and I noticed it was directed by Edward Hall. Is that THE Edward Hall ? As the feamale parts were not played by men possibly not.

Fruity Old Actors

16 December 2013 - 01:06 PM

Poor old McKellen on the receiving end again over the weekend: "Damian Lewis has been compelled to apologise to fellow actor Ian McKellen after comments he made saying he did not want to end up a fruity actor who is known for playing wizards.". Reminds me of that graceless interview given by Jim Broadbent where he apologised for winning an Oscar because he knew Ian wanted it so badly. McKellen, also nominated that year, had to just take it. Broadbent was interviewed in the Times on Saturday - surprisingly he came across as very difficult and quite unpleasant. McKellen is totally out of their league as a stage actor of course so he can happily ignore them, but even so ...

Peter O'toole

16 December 2013 - 12:26 PM

I saw him a couple of times on stage, "Man and Superman" and "Pygmalion". Star vehicles doesn't come close to describing those productions which he dominated at the expense of everything else - actors, director, script etc. Not many actors like that around these days (if any).

The White Carnation - Finborough

12 December 2013 - 09:33 PM

Anyone ? I'm seeing it next week.
