Lionel Blair at Throughly Modern Millie, (gave Amanda Holden a big wave at the end!) and sat behind Helen Worth at the Mamma Mia 10th anniversary performance. I suppose Bjorn and Benny at the same performance is cheating a little......

The first time I saw her it was her chemistry with Oli especially (but also Dianne) that really impressed me. ALAYM was veeeery touchy feely! And For Good was lovely. In the tiny little scene Sabrina had with Oli on Monday their chemistry shone through. I really enjoyed her characterisation, you can tell she's put a lot of thought into how she would play te character. She seemed to play Elphie a bit more devious than anyone else i've seen. Loved her "Boo!" and sly little look after WITF!

I saw the evening performance of Wicked at the Apollo Victoria on 19 September - and thought it was appalling. Not the show - I have seen it some 18 times and obviously like it - but the performances of the principals was universally poor.

I haven't seen it for around a year and in that time the production standards have seriously slipped. Petra Siniawski, Michael McCabe and Pippa Ailion should be taking a serious look at this current production - they are responsible for it and culpable for allowing it to continue in its current desultory way.

Sam Kelly is hopelessly miscast as the Wizard. Apart from anything else, he just looks too unfit to perform the role properly. His voice trailed off to a whisper on more than one occasion - he seemed to just run out of 'puff'.

Dianne Pilkington 'ambled through' her performance with the conviction of a first read-through. Does she get any direction these days (Petra?) or is she allowed to just throw away and fumble the lines as her fancy takes her? From parts of her performance being totally understated, 'Popular' has been reduced to maniacal nonsense. Is Helen Dallimore busy? Could she pop back to show Dianne what she is supposed to be doing if the director can't be bothered?

It is the first time I have seen Ashleigh Gray perform Elphaba. I realise that she is the current standby. I don't in any way mean to be cruel; but she is not suitable for this part. She has a lovely voice and good acting ability - but she cannot deliver the 'power performance' which the role needs. I think the  casting director has got to do some hard work and find a suitable incumbent for the job of standby Elphaba. It might be easy to choose the people who've been around longest for the lead roles - but is that casting?

Harriet Thorpe comes nowhere near the performance that Miriam Margolyes or Kerry Washington gave in the role (I didn't see Susie Blake). Harriet looks like she is acting it in front of a  TV camera - it all looks too 'small' (or possibly she can't be bothered because she has been doing it too long).

And so it goes on - if anyone responsible for this production actually cares about it any more - get the principals to 'shape up or get out'. I actually felt embarrassed for the 2,000 odd people who presumably hadn't seen this show before and would not, therefore, know what was going on. In its way, its quite a complicated story and the actors generally did nothing to explain it. It was rushed; the comedic elements were mainly thrown away and lines were 'swallowed' instead of projected.

At 60 quid a throw - it's not fair on the theatre-going public - its a mess - sort it out!

#259641 Bad Behaviour At A Show

OK, fair enough, I have been named and shamed :-(

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to all those good theatregoing people I have (never) disturbed, and would like to lay out my plans for the future.

Before attending any theatrical productions I will place my phone on 'silent' mode.  I will then fully turn it off, remove the SIM card, and place the phone in a left luggage locker at Victoria Station.

I shall follow a similar rigorous procedure with my watch, because although its ticking has never been known to disturb anyone yet either, the risk is just too great.

My sincere hope is that this is seen as a victory for the common man.

Don't have nightmares, do sleep well.

Oli will have been in the show for over a year when he leaves. It's cast change day, some other cast are leaving too. ROA has taken a massive toll on his voice. As much as I love his Drew, I think he's made the right decision to leave.

Looking forward to finding out who the real new Drew is! :D

And can this thread be merged into the ROA thread? It really doesn't need it's own separate thread!
