Topics I've Started

Two Into One At Menier

28 March 2014 - 11:07 PM

Dull, dated & not worthy of revival. I didn't find it even vaguely funny

Away From Home At Jermyn Street Theatre

22 March 2014 - 05:37 PM

Rob Ward gives a strong performance in this one hander about football's last taboo. It's an edgy, gritty play though not an easy watch. I found it hard to sympathise with Kyle, the football loving male prostitute. Whilst seeing things only through Kyle's eyes is thought provoking, I wonder if the play would be stronger if it showed the perspective of the footballer too.

Jenna Russell

26 January 2014 - 09:08 PM

Spent a fabulous afternoon at the Charing Cross Theatre today seeing Jenna Russell sing & chat as part of the Singular Sensations series. She is such a fabulously talented performer, a  really great interpreter of songs. I've loved much of her stage work, especially shows like  Merrily, Sunday in the Park, Into the Woods etc but hadn't appreciated how much of her early work I'd also seen like her Young Sally in Follies or her role in Martin Guerre.

She came across as very natural & down to earth and had some great stories to tell. Her stories of encounters with Patti Lupone & Earttha Kitt were just brilliant :)

National Theatre Ticket Prices

23 January 2014 - 07:37 PM

I've just noticed in the new NT programme of productions to May that ticket prices have gone up. Top price now looks to be 50 whilst the the cheap front row seats in the Lyttelton & Olivier (excluding Travelex productions) have increased from 12 to 15. Still great value if you can get them but a 25% increase nonetheless

My Favourite Things In 2013

22 December 2013 - 02:49 PM

As the year draws to a close, I've been reflecting on another busy year of theatre going. I don't think 2013 has been a vintage year for theatre in London but there are some productions I've seen which really stand out. Of the plays I've seen which opened this year, there are 5 which I think were outstanding:

1 - Chimerica at the Almeida & Harold Pinter - an epic, complex & phenomenal piece of theatre

2 - The Weir at the Donmar - a gripping play & an outstanding ensemble piece

3 - Jumpers for Goalposts at the Bush - heart breaking, heart warming & ultimately joyous, it made me laugh & cry. A wonderful play with an incredibly talented cast

4 - Ghosts at the Almeida - a 5 star quality production in every sense, the final scene is one of the most harrowing I've ever seen on stage

5 - Handbagged at the Tricycle - a superb cast in a hilarious & engaging play

One musical performance stands out. Seeing Patti Lupone at Leicester Square theatre this summer was truly sensational & something that will stay with me forever
